Vivir sin permiso, translated in English Unauthorized Living, is a Spanish series based on the book Vivir sin permiso y otras historias de Oeste, by Manuel Rivas. The show tells the story of an influential drug dealer from Oeste (an imaginary town in Galicia, Spain ) that hides his drug empire behind a large company called Open sea. Nemo, the drug dealer, discovers on his 60’s birthday anniversary that he has Alzheimer’s and decides to prepare one of his 2 legal children, Nina y Carlos, to take over the company. But he wants to leave them a clean company.
The only problem is that his God-son Mario Mendoza, that helped him built the whole empire, was expecting to take over the company and he never imagined a second that Nina or Carlos would be the chosen ones. So he starts sabotaging Nemo’s actions.
Nemo has another daughter, Lara, from a previous lover from his youth that is not interested in his father’s money but is the key to the whole action of the movie.
The plot is captivating and the characters are amazing. I loved Alex Gonzalez playing a villain role! Another character worth mentioning is Fero, Nemo’s right hand, that brings colour to the scenes.

Welcome to the family (Benvinguts a la família) is a Catalan TV show including two seasons. It is an extraordinary series in Spain as the original language it aired in is Catalan, not Spanish. In the series, we follow the mother, Àngela, who has to leave her house where she lives with her three children after being abandoned by her ex-husband. Without a place to go, she and her brother-in-law, Nando, turn to her father Eduardo for help, who she hasn’t seen for many years. However, her father lives now with his way younger wife, Victòria, and her daughter Àlex. Shortly after she moves in, her father dies. Someone has to die
Someone Has to Die is a three-part miniseries from Mexican director, Manolo Caro. He also created the hit Netflix show, La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers), which is filmed in Mexico City.
Someone Has to Die, however, takes place in Spain. It is a period piece, set in the 1950s when Spain was still under the fascist Franco regime. Under this oppressive government, Spain was ultraconservative and any deviation from “the norm” could result in persecution.
The protagonists in the story include several members of the wealthy Falcón family. The family’s son, Gabino Falcón, returns home to Spain after a decade in Mexico — and shocks everyone on his return with a male ballet dancer named Lázaro.
It’s pretty clear the two men are lovers, which can land them in jail (or worse), and the family’s patriarch expresses his disapproval. Things become even more complicated when Gabino’s sister, Mina, falls for Lázaro. Without spoiling the ending, this love triangle does have a tragic finale.

Set in Madrid, ‘Valeria’ resembles a modern version of ‘Sex and the City.’ The show is based on En los Zapatos de Valeria, a series of novels by Elísabet Benavent, and is focused on the lives of four best friends – Valeria, Lola, Carmen, and Nerea.
The main character is, of course, Valeria, a novelist in her late 20s dealing with creative and marital crises. Struggling to find inspiration for her novel and feeling stuck in her marriage, she finds support in her three best friends, each having her own challenges.
From Valeria’s new crush Victor to Lola’s ‘relationship’ with a married man to Nerea’s life in the shadow of her parents, ‘Valeria’ shows all the sides of life – the friendships and joys alongside doubts and worries about love, career, and everything in between.
Adding a great extra touch to the show, it’s certainly fun to see the neighborhoods of Madrid, the landmarks, the apartments, the local cafes and bars, and of course, the fashion.

As a female health care professional, myself, it’s great to see all of these storylines come together from a women’s point of view. It also shows the realities of war and the impact that has on the importance of making the most of each day.
These women are full of love for their friends that are working alongside them as well as love for their country. It’s dangerous for them to be working as nurses on the frontlines, but they are navigating this new life and finding love along the way.
TV shows like this help make history come alive. It’s often why when looking for places to travel to, historical places always seem to find their way onto my bucket list. Such as all the amazing and historical things to do in Virginia.

The Spanish Netflix series production Elite is about a group of teenagers who go to one of the best private schools in Spain. Most of the kids come from privileged backgrounds, only 3 students – Samuel, Nadia and Christian come from poor families. They were admitted free of charge and received a 1-year scholarship after an earthquake destroyed the dilapidated public school. However, not all the students are okay with that, and tensions arise between the wealthy and poor students, but a love affair and friendships also develop.
The three are treated disparagingly by many of their spoiled and rich classmates. In the school year, they have to prove themselves not only with good grades but also with their colleagues in the class. Suddenly there is a murder of a student. The question now is, who did it? A great series that tells about the different ways of life. It is about dislike, envy, many secrets but also about love and sexual attraction.

La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South) is based on a novel of the same name by Spanish author/journalist Arturo Perez-Reverte. The story is about the rise to power of Teresa Mendoza, a humble Mexican woman who somewhat accidentally falls into the international drug trafficking world.
She is in love with a pilot who’s employed by the Mexican cartels, and eventually follows in his footsteps. When they assassinate him, she flees her homeland of Mexico to the south of Spain in the hopes of avoiding the same fate.
While she does, she also continues a life of drug trafficking crime. Eventually, Teresa becomes the head of her own cartel, and assumes the nickname of “The Mexicana,” and she becomes the most important person in the Spanish cartels.
Though she’s a very powerful woman in the cartel world, she is constantly at odds with herself and her morality. This life of crime catches up with her eventually, and she ends up having to flee Spain for Italy to save her own life.

One amazing Spanish TV series worth your binging time is Money Heist (in Spanish La casa de Papel). The original release is May 2017 which follows a storyline of the main actor named “The Professor” that recruits 8 team members for a series of heists.
The first of the brilliant heists in seasons 1 and 2 include the theft of €984 million at the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid, which was a masterpiece of a storyline. It was not so predictable with lots of twists in the planning. Other seasons follow on with a new heist at the Bank of Spain, also located in Madrid. Here you end up watching some new characters join the heist with new skills and techniques, making it just as unpredictable as the first big heist.
Since most has been filmed in Madrid, this provides a fantastic feel with the location and Spanish actors combined. The storyline, actors, actresses, and music make it a feel-good heist that you won’t be able to stop watching after 1 episode.

El Cartel de Los Sapos or (The Snitch Cartel) in English which can be streamed on Netflix in Colombia, is a hard-hitting drama about the underground world of narco-traffickers in Colombia who are striving to move up the ladder in the violent world of cocaine, money, lies, and deception.
The story is based on actual events but the real names and locations are changed. For example, the only real name mentioned (in the past reference) is Pablo Escobar who operated from Medellin but instead of calling the city by its real name, it is called El Occidente de Colombia throughout the series.
Each episode keeps you hanging off your seat as it depicts the most intimate parts of the cartels lifestyles. At first, the series appears like any other regular Latin American telenovela, but as the plot begin to unfold, things get real nasty. Some of the characters portrayed were even once on the FBI most wanted list.

Monarca is a Mexican drama series that revolves around a family and their multimillionaire tequila business in Mexico. The president, and owner of the company, called Monarca, calls his daughter back from the US where she flew to start a new life as a journalist.
He believes she’s the only one who can run the business and clean all the mess and mistakes that have been done in the past, including implications with drug cartels, which eventually led to tragic consequences. The father relies on his daughter’s honesty and integrity to bring back the family business to its original grandeur starting with a clean slate.
Obviously, the greedy brothers didn’t agree, and while mysteries from the past start to unravel, multiple issues arise in the present personal stories of each character. It’s an intricate and fascinating plot full of twists and unexpected revelations. It’s a shame it’s been cancelled halfway through.
