Top 10 railway journeys around the world part 2

Top 10 railway journeys around the world part 2

Welcome to this article – part 2 of my top 10 railway journeys to take around the world! It was incredibly difficult to choose only 10 and to be honest any holiday that involves a train journey is enjoyable for me.

Sitting back, relaxing and watching the world pass you by has so many advantages to other methods of transport and is always my first choice.

So without further ado lets find out the next 5 in my top 10 railway journeys to take around the world??

I am not going to quibble over these trips because quite frankly either of these is a dream train journey for me. The Trans-Siberian is probably the most famous – an epic 10,555 kms from Russia to Vladivostok. However it is the Trans-Mongolian which tops my wish list – travelling across Russia, Mongolia and into China.

Whilst I haven’t taken this trip fellow blogger James from onlybyland.com has and if you want to read up more about his travels take a look at his posts about the trip on his blog!

I have a need to travel the USA via Amtrak – in the footsteps (or is it the train tracks of Portillo or Billy Connolly). I have taken the Coast Starlight and I would highly recommend it.

While I am aware its probably not THE number one train trip to take in the USA – Chicago to San Francisco on the California Zephyr must surely take that title BUT the Coast Starlight is still worth serious consideration! We travelled from Seattle to San Francisco staying in a roomette which was very comfortable (though if you get the top bunk it can be a little claustrophobic so my husband tells me) and then caught the train again to LA (not so comfortable in the normal day coaches – no cinema room, free wi-fi or all-inclusive meals). It was still an adventure and although I never sleep that well on a sleeper train I always enjoy the experience.

If you love trains then a trip on a bullet train in Japan must surely make it onto your bucket list. Known as Shinkansen these trains are some of the fastest in the world travelling up to 200 mph!!!! Definitely THE way to travel between major cities in Japan!

This is a luxury train journey that takes two days across some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. I need no reason to ever visit Canada other than for me it is one of the most awesome countries in the world! There are different routes to choose from on this journey with the final destination Vancouver on the west coast.

The single-track line connects Hanoi in the north with Ho Chi Minh city in the south. This 1,726 km line was completed 81 years ago and again this is one of the greatest train journeys to take in the world and is high on my bucket list. Stop off on the way at Hue and Danang (for Hoi An). For more information about the line (and rail travel worldwide) check out seat61.com

Planning a trip to Vietnam then check out this excellent 14 day itinerary put together by loumessugo.com

Do you agree with my top 10 railway journeys or are there others you would include? Let me know! I am always on the look out for great train journeys to take around the world!

I have yet to go on a proper train journey, and have quite a few in mind, but it would be difficult to choose. The Rocky Mountaineer looks like something for me, or the Trans-Mongolian express. I will definitely come to your blog for inspiration and info when we finally decide to try this way of traveling!

Thanks for including my photos of the Reunification Express (which I have taken once the whole way from Hanoi to HCMC and plenty of other times partially as far as Danang). I love this post, being a big train fan too. I’ve taken the Trans-Mongolian from Beijing to Moscow via Ulaan-Baatar, but actually it was part of a journey from Hanoi to Helsinki! And another time I took the Trans-whatever from Beijing to Moscow going around Mongolia, not through. Both times were amazing. I’d love to take trains in Canada and USA which is a continent I don’t know nearly well enough.

We’re considering the rocky mountains in Canada next summer – I’ll bare that train journey in mind, I bet the scenery is breath taking!

  5. August 25, 2017 / 11:10 am

The Rocky Mounaineer has been on my list since I can remember and I will do it one day… I’ve only recently been made aware of the Coast Starlight so will go back and read your post. That might be next I think. 🙂

Wow, so many beautiful train trips to explore 🙂 I should try the Coast Starlight since I live 2 hours from Seattle, thank you for the inspiration! All of your train trips look so magical.

There are some wonderful train journeys listed here. From Seattle to LA down the west coast must have some incredible views. I’ve taken the bullet train in Spain but never in Japan, I think the Japanese bullet train is a little faster so I must check it out too. The Rocky mountaineer must have some incredible views too but at a more leisurely pace!

The Trans-Siberian/Mongolian is the journey I want to do for sure, oooo, and the bullet train in Japan! Having experienced the Maglev in Shanghai (only for 8 minutes though as that travelled at over 160mph), I definitely want to experience more high-speed options … just for the thrill of it (but will miss out on Split one!). Thanks for sharing and reminding me of the great train experiences there are in the world! #feetdotravel

Yup, I am with you when it comes to the trans Siberian rail journey and going all the way to China would be so epic! I did some train trips in India and Sri Lanka and would definitely love to go on the bullet trains in Japan! Now that would be an experience@

Have always had a fascination for trains and Rail journeys. These are really some breathtaking rail journeys which are great experiences in themselves. I have done many train journeys in Switzerland and found each one of them amazing. Hope to do the trans-Siberian circuit some day.

Wonderful listed train journeys :-). I have some done train journeys in Poland and in England. I would like to try a fastest train like TGV from London to Paris etc. I saw that you used a train in Japan with a speed 200 mph i think it was good experience 🙂
    Great List.
