Destinations

Over the past 20 – 30 years due to the availability of information on the internet and the subsequent massive growth of social media the world out there is familiar – we feel we know it.  We have all seen David Attenborough’s encounter with gorillas, or videos and photographs of the Northern Lights or inside the pyramids of Giza….our bucket list overflows with the experiences of others.

Many of us are no longer happy with the package holidays to the Costa Brava (for us Brits anyway!) that typified travel for the generations before us. We want to experience all the things we have seen on TV or the internet (or shared by fellow travellers) for ourselves. We want to meet the people who live in the places we visit and experience their culture, learn about their history, sample the local cuisine, appreciate their wildlife and more………..

If you are one such traveler (like myself) you will want to know more, read more, and explore more. And we want to do it in a way that is sustainable and responsible ensuring that our visit does not negatively impact the people or the environment.

Sustainable travel is an  area which I (and many others) are becoming more conscious of and whilst yes I have included guides to some UNESCO World Heritage Sites I am aware that tourism is having a considerable impact on some of them.  Its a fact that not enough designated sites have tourism management plans in place at present.

If you are traveling where possible use companies that have socially and environmentally responsible practices. For example those who respect and work with the local community and invest in preserving the culture, nature, wildlife etc. Also consider what you can do to support the area – visit local markets, employ local guides, respect the area (do not litter/enter restricted areas)

I am also a huge advocate for train travel. Whilst I understand that often restrictions on our time make traveling to destinations by air more practical it is a fact that rail travel is more environmentally friendly (and more fun!)

My destination guides will help you plan your next trip with a focus on authentic and sustainable travel to European, Australian, North American, African and Asian destinations!
